Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. Type 1 diabetes isn’t caused by poor diet or an unhealthy lifestyle. For reasons not yet fully understood, your immune system – which is meant to protect you from viruses and bacteria – attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas. People living with Type 1 Diabetes have to manually take insulin just to stay alive. The condition affects 400,000 people in the UK, with over 29,000 of them children.
JDRF is the type 1 diabetes charity, and is the only charity in the world dedicated entirely to curing, treating and preventing this life-changing condition. The Charity’s mission is to eradicate Type 1 Diabetes.
